Open PhD Position (m/f/d) in modelling atmospheric dust aerosol

Leipzig, 09.12.2024

The Leibniz Institute for Tropospheric Research is a research institute of the Leibniz Association and an internationally renowned institute in the field of aerosol and cloud research.

We are looking for a PhD student in the field of modelling the emissions and transport of mineral dust aerosol utilizing a novel convection-resolving model system. The strength of mineral dust emissions from arid regions due to strong surface winds depends on wind speeds and soil properties. A calculation of dust emissions on coarse grids as is common in climate models can lead to errors if the sources are small-scale or driven by mesoscale wind events. New models such as the ICON allow the calculation of global atmospheric circulation at a grid resolution km-scales at global scales. The aim of the project is to utilize the new ICON-HAM-Lite model to evaluate the role of model resolution and convective activity on dust emission and transport processes.

We are looking for a PhD candidate with a Master's degree in meteorology.  Previous experience in atmospheric modelling, explicit interest in desert dust processes and experience in model analysis with the Python programming language is desired.
