PhD Student or PostDoc (m, f, d) on Aerosol-Cloud Interactions

Leipzig, 04.07.2024

The Leibniz Institute for Tropospheric Research is a research institute of the Leibniz Association and an internationally renowned institute in the field of aerosol and cloud research.

In the Department of Experimental Aerosol and Cloud Microphysics we are currently offering a PhD position on the topic "Influence of aerosol particles and their origin on the properties of clouds over the Dutch coast". The position can alternatively be offered to a scientist as a PostDoc. It includes the participation in a one-month campaign stay as well as the evaluation and publication of the data and results afterwards.

As part of the international CAINA (Cloud-Aerosol-Interactions in a Nitrogen-dominated Atmosphere) project, a measurement campaign will be carried out in the northern Netherlands in spring 2025 using the ACTOS helicopter-borne measurement platform. ACTOS contains a large number of measuring devices for the direct measurement of aerosol, cloud and meteorological parameters.

A key objective of this project is to investigate the interactions between aerosol particles and cloud formation. To this end, the devices for characterising  cloud microphysics must first be tested, calibrated and integrated into the platform in advance of the campaign. Experienced TROPOS scientists and the workshops are available to provide support. During the measurement campaign, the devices must be operated and the data quality checked daily.

For the following tasks in this project, TROPOS is therefore looking for a PhD student or PostDoc (m, f, d):

  • Carrying out laboratory measurements with measuring devices for cloud microphysics
  • Integration of the devices on the measurement platform
  • Participation in the measurement campaign and supervision of cloud microphysics measurements
  • Analysing the measurements and interpreting and publishing the results

We are looking for a PhD student or PostDoc with a degree in physics, meteorology or a comparable subject and a solid command of written and spoken English. It is important that you are willing to participate in the one-month measurement campaign in the northern Netherlands and to contribute to our international team on site. An interest in experimental work, previous knowledge of aerosol or cloud measurement technology and programming skills in Python or similar scripting languages are helpful.

During an induction period at TROPOS, the applicant will learn how to operate the institute's own measuring instruments independently and how to interpret and analyse the data.

This scientific evaluation with regard to aerosol-cloud interactions is carried out after the measurement campaign in collaboration with the international CAINA team. The tasks therefore require a high degree of independence as well as the ability to solve problems together.

The position offers the opportunity to acquire or deepen comprehensive knowledge in the field of aerosol-cloud interactions and cloud microphysics. The integration into the CAINA project results in international networking through intensive exchange and cooperation with the partners.

The work could start soon, the ideal start date would be 01.09.2024. The position as a doctoral candidate is limited to 3 years and involves a part-time position with 30 hours/ week. Alternatively, the position can also be filled for 2 years by a scientist with a doctorate for 40 hours/ week. The salary will be TV-L pay group 13, including the attractive social benefits of the public sector. In addition, the institute offers a wide range of options for balancing work and caring responsibilities, such as flexible working hours and daycare places.

TROPOS values the diversity of its employees and pursues Equal Opportunity goals. We aim to increase the proportion of women in research and therefore encourage qualified women to apply. People with severe disabilities have priority in hiring if they have equal aptitude, ability and professional qualifications.
