New website of the TROPOS now provides detailed information about the institute

Leipzig, 13.01.2014

The new website of the Leibniz Institute for Tropospheric Research has been launched. The website www.tropos.de now provides much more detailed and current information about the work at the institute. The renewal was necessary because the former website no longer complied with the technical requirements.

In addition to the basic barrier-free accessibility the webpage can be better displayed on mobile devices such as smart phones. The new website in German and English is managed by the open source content management system TYPO3 and can therefore be maintained by all employees. For example Current atmospheric measurement data for e to aerosols and clouds over Leipzig expand the existing range of information as well as reports on measurement campaigns in Germany, Europe and overseas. "We have spent During the last few months we have spent a lot of time to create a website to inform all interested parties about TROPOS in a more intensive way. A modern website is like a business card and an invitation to virtually visit TROPOS", explains director Prof. Andreas Macke the goal of the relaunch. In addition, the detailed web pages shall help scientists and partners to find relevant information more easily and to learn about research projects and results, existing technologies at the TROPOS , and to find contacts for collaborations.

The new web pages are divided into five categories, which are permanently displayed in the header bar: "Institute" contains key data on the Institute, like its mission, scientific objectives, organization structure as well as information about career opportunities, equal opportunities, promotion of young researchers or . "Research" shows projects of the main research themes “atmospheric aerosols” and “aerosol - cloud interactions” as well as the involvement of TROPOS in international infrastructures and the technologies developed at the institute. The category "Teaching" for example highlights the “Leibniz Graduate School on aerosols, clouds and radiation”, which is organized in close cooperation with the University of Leipzig. Here Students find current courses with TROPOS participation or topics for bachelor and master theses. "Discover" explains the goals of tropospheric research in a generally comprehensible form. Here photos and videos are placed to allow a look behind the laboratory doors and at exotic measurement stations. Here you find data from the weather station, lidar, cloud radar, camera and satellite as well as background information on the European Year of Air or the low emission zone Leipzig. The "News" section shows TROPOS’ latest information including press releases, photos and media presence as well as events like the Leipzig Meteorological Colloquium or reports on measurement campaigns. The sub-heading “publications” now enables the search for academic publications from TROPOS researchers. These changes shall improve the accessibility of the institute’s research activities especially for the media.

"A big thank to all our scientists who have worked on the renewal of the website and have contributed a lot of ideas and manifold information," says executive assistant Beate Richter from the website working group. Webmaster Katja Schmieder adds: "We would also like to thank the team of the Leipzig digital agency PLUSPOL interactive, who have developed the concept together with TROPOS, implemented it and secured the technical realization behind the scenes.” Even though both sides are happy to see the online presentation completed the works are continuing: With over 140 scientists and more than 50 projects, there are almost daily reasons for updates.
