EarthCARE’s multispectral imager puts clouds into context

The third instrument complements vertical cloud profiles with horizontal measurements - ESA statement

Less than two months after the successful launch of the EarthCARE satellite, two of its four instruments are already delivering measurement data. Now those involved in the mission are also receiving the first measurements from the third instrument. The imaging spectrometer (Multi-Spectral Imager (MSI)) provides global insights into various types of aerosol and clouds. MSI will supplement the data from the other EarthCARE instruments with valuable information. The joint mission of the European Space Agency (ESA) and the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) aims to measure clouds, aerosols and radiation more accurately than ever before. Researchers from the Leibniz Institute for Tropospheric Research (TROPOS) are making an important contribution to this by developing algorithms that derive cloud properties, among other things, from the measurements of the device that has now been put into operation.
