Exploring the Frontiers of Ocean-Atmosphere Research: SOLAS Open Science Conference 2024

Leipzig, 21.11.2024 – Manuela van Pinxteren

The SOLAS Open Science Conference 2024 took place from November 10-14 in the vibrant coastal city of Goa, India, and was hosted by the CSIR - National Institute of Oceanography. This biennial event brought together scientists from around the world to explore the intricate biogeochemical and physical interactions between the ocean and atmosphere, continuing the mission of the international research initiative Surface Ocean - Lower Atmosphere Study (SOLAS), founded in 2004.

In addition to the scientific presentations, the conference also emphasized the important link between science and society and its role in tackling global environmental problems. Another key issue was the emerging topic of microplastics and their impact on the ocean-atmosphere system.

Representing TROPOS, Manuela van Pinxteren was invited as a keynote speaker, while Ankush Kaushik, Christina Breitenstein, Khanneh Wadinga Fomba and Sebastian Zeppenfeld engaged in vibrant discussions in presenting their work during the poster sessions. A particular highlight was Ankush Kaushik winning a poster prize for his innovative contributions to microplastics research.
